Trauma Responsive Social Work Services Programme

The Trauma Responsive Social Work Services Programme aims to ensure Scotland’s social work services recognise when people are affected by trauma and adversity, and respond in ways that prevent further harm, support recovery, address inequalities and improve life chances.

What we want to achieve

We work in partnership with social work services, people with lived experience and national stakeholders to help ensure that:

  • organisations develop trauma responsive policies, systems and environments that support sustainable whole-system change;
  • managers are equipped to lead, support and embed trauma responsive practice across teams and services; and
  • social workers and relevant multidisciplinary colleagues develop the trauma knowledge and skills appropriate to their role.

Why this work is needed

Engagement with partners has identified two key areas requiring continued support:

  • strategic leadership, oversight and coordination to plan and deliver trauma-responsive system change across social work services; and
  • increased access to trauma learning and development, including Trauma Skilled and Trauma Enhanced practice, alongside practical implementation support for the workforce.

To address these issues, the programme focuses on three priorities.

Priorities

Governance

Our work is guided by collaboration, shared learning and the expertise of those with lived and living experience. The Trauma Responsive Social Work Services Programme is supported by:

  • an Expert Advisory Group, bringing together organisations representing people with lived experience and social work practitioners from various practices; and
  • a Partnership Delivery Group, bringing together national and local partners responsible for supporting delivery of programme priorities.
These groups help shape, inform and oversee the programme and provide updates to the National Trauma Transformation Programme Steering Group.
